Are you thinking of becoming a mortgage broker in Alberta?
If you’re considering a career as a mortgage broker in Alberta, there are a few key steps to follow—from education to licensing to finding the right support network. Here’s a clear path to help you take that first step toward building a career in mortgages.
1. First, make sure you meet the basic requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be able to lawfully study and work in Canada
- Be able to provide specific government-issued identification (ID)
- Have a minimum of Canadian high school education or equivalent
- Be proficient in the English language
2. Complete the required courses
To get started, you’ll enroll in the Mortgage Associates Program (MAP) — this is the education approved by the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA). It’s thoughtfully designed in two parts, giving you the foundation and practical tools you’ll need to thrive:
- Fundamentals of Mortgage Brokerage
- Practice of Mortgage Brokerage
You can take these courses through providers like AMBA (Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association) or Alberta Real Estate School. You’ll have up to 6 months to complete each course at your own pace.
3. Pass the exams
After each course, you’ll write an exam administered by RECA. The exam is written at an approved writting facility. You’ll need at least 70% to move forward toward licensing. You’ll get two chances to pass.
4. Apply for your Mortgage Associate license
Once you’ve passed both exams, you can apply for your license through RECA’s online portal. You’ll need to:
- Provide proof of course completion
- Complete a criminal record check (RECA will guide you through this)
- Pay the licensing fee
Once you’re licensed, you can start working as a Mortgage Associate with a licensed brokerage. Keep in mind—you’ll need to be hired by a brokerage within one year of getting your license.
5. Keep your license active
To stay licensed, RECA requires you to complete continuing education every renewal cycle and pay an annual renewal fee.
